Canton Fair 2023 Trade Show Tips

We've all been longing for this; after 3 years of hiatus, the Canton Fair in China is finally back for 2023. There are a few new hurdles we need to plan ahead, but otherwise, The Canton Fair is back!

When sourcing products from China, there's no better place to be than the Canton Fair. This trade show offers an unparalleled opportunity to meet with vendors from across China in one convenient location. Whether you're looking for electronics, textiles, or home goods, the Canton Fair has it all. Every year over 180,000 attendees show up as buyers in Guangzhou to source products from China. There are over 60,000 suppliers present at the Canton Fair and many more events and opportunities.

The Canton Fair has been going on for more than 50 years, and it takes place twice a year, in April and October. It's really challenging to comprehend the size of the Canton Fair complex. Consider the largest convention you have ever attended, and then magnify that by four. It's massive.

Canton Fair Dates & Phases

The fair will essentially be divided into three phases, with different key niches being highlighted in each phase:

Canton Fair Dates Spring 2023

April 15–19 for electronics and lighting
April 23–27 for consumer goods, ceramics, and maternity and baby products (NEW)
May 1–5 for medical products, textiles, and items for the "silver hair economy" or elderly niche (NEW).

You must be extremely careful to choose the phase that most applies to you.

You should generally dress professionally and in your most comfortable clothes and shoes because you may have completed a marathon by day's end. I've taken 20,000 steps total during 1 day at Canton Fair.

To get the most out of your experience at the Canton Fair, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Plan ahead. With so many vendors and products on display, it's easy to get overwhelmed. That's why it's important to do your research ahead of time and come prepared with a list of the products and vendors you want to see. Have your prototype ready, designs, or anything assets that would help the supplier understand the product requirements you wish to source.

Be prepared to negotiate and be open-minded. Chinese vendors expect buyers to negotiate, so be prepared to haggle over prices. Be respectful in your approach, though, and keep in mind that maintaining a positive working relationship with a vendor can be beneficial in the long run. Therefore, be sure to protect your brand and your product idea before concluding any deals or signing any purchase orders. Double-check your supplier to see if they meet your product's requirements or the standards set in your country you want to sell. Discussing or arranging a NNN, distribution, or molding agreement may also be valuable to you.

Look beyond the price. While getting a good deal is important, price isn't the only factor to consider. It would help if you also looked at the quality of the products, the reliability of the vendor, and the shipping and delivery terms. Look at every detail, how the product is finished, how the edges are sealed, or how the product is packaged. All these details will define how your product quality is to your customers.

Build relationships. Building solid vendor relationships is key to long-term success in China product sourcing. Take the time to get to know the vendors you're interested in and learn more about their products and manufacturing processes. Ask questions, even if there is a language barrier. They will appreciate your engagement with them and build a unique relationship.
